After Iranian state media released footage of captive sailors that appear to be crying, the US Navy released an extensive statement condemning and criticizing the actions. The sailors were on two vessels that drifted into Iranian waters in the Persian Gulf on January 12. The 10 men and women were forced to surrender on their knees, and taken into 16 hours of captivity.
Spokesman for the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet, Cmdr. Kevin Stephens, in a statement to ABC News said “as Secretary [of State John] Kerry has said, we are disgusted by the exploitation of our sailors in Iranian propaganda. Professional mariners understand that it is a duty and obligation to assist other mariners who suffer mechanical problems or who find themselves off track at sea. In fact, our Navy has assisted Iranian mariners in distress in the Gulf region seven times since 2012.”
It is unknown if the sailors knew that they had crossed into Iranian territorial waters. US Central Command has released a statement saying that while travelling from Kuwait to Bahrain the afternoon of January 12th, one of the vessels suffered engine trouble. While the sailors assessed the problem, they were approached by an Iranian boat.
The video, featured below, shows the sailors being captured and held in a detainment room. The video was featured on Iranian State Television.
It is shocking that the US military has become a toy for the near nuclear state. Even after President Obama’s deal with Iran, they flew a drone over a US aircraft carrier, and now are using our sailors for their propaganda videos. This is a new low for the armed forces.
