NARAL Pro-Choice America live tweeted throughout the Super Bowl Sunday night, inciting a firestorm on social media after claiming that a Doritos commercial, “humanized fetuses.”
The ad features a mother and father getting an ultrasounds for their baby. The child reacts on the screen to the father’s Doritos chip, appearing to lunge for the chip. When the annoyed mother grabs and throws the chip, the baby “decides” to be a premature birth.
NARAL’s response? “#NotBuyingIt – that @Doritos ad using #antichoice tactic of humanizing fetuses & sexist tropes of dads as clueless & moms as uptight.”
This drew consternation from many on twitter, accusing NARAL of everything from “flunking basic biology” to being a “buzzkill at parties.”
Other ads that drew NARAL’s criticism included:
-an Audi ad that featured a retired male astronaut, saying: “You couldn’t find a single female astronaut to feature in your ad?”
-a Snickers ad featuring William Dafoe in a dress, calling it “transphobic”
-a Buick ad featuring women fighting over a wedding bouquet.
